Fuel Pump Relay on a 1988 Isuzu Trooper

The 1988 Isuzu Trooper II was equipped with a 2.6-liter in-line four-cylinder engine, capable of producing 120 horsepower and 146 foot-pounds of torque. The 1988 Trooper II was available with two or four doors and came standard with four-wheel disc brakes. When the fuel pump relay on the 1988 Trooper II goes bad, it must be replaced, rather than repaired. Ensure that you receive the correct relay at your parts store by bringing in the old relay and comparing the serial numbers stamped into both relays.

Instructions

    1

Open the Trooper's hood and set the hood prop. Disconnect the negative battery cable using an open-end wrench.

    2

Look at the top of the fuse panel in the engine compartment. The fuel pump relay is marked on the lid as "Fuel Pump." If the markings on the lid are worn, remove the lid and look at the fuse panel. The fuse panel has an end row with three black box relays. The second row inward has four relays and contains the fuel pump relay. Looking at the relay end of the panel, the fuel pump relay is the third relay in from the left or second relay in from the right.

    3

Pull the fuel pump relay out, using pliers if needed.

    4

Add a light coating of dielectric grease to the prongs on the new fuel pump relay. Install the relay into the fuse panel, then reinstall the fuse panel lid.

    5

Connect the negative battery cable to the battery and tighten it snugly with an open-end wrench. Start the Trooper II to test your new fuel pump relay.
