The thermostat in a 1992 Jeep Cherokee is a heat-activated valve that regulates the flow of coolant to the engine. As the vehicle ages, and with heat and corrosion, the valve will begin to stick and eventually freeze. When this happens, your Cherokee will overheat. Replacing a thermostat is an easy job; you just need to know where to look for it.
Instructions
- 1
Locate the fat hose that runs from the left of the radiator to the engine. The thermostat is inside the housing at the end of this hose and just before the engine.
2Place a bucket underneath the thermostat housing to catch any leaking coolant. Take apart the housing using a ratchet and socket; there should be two bolts to remove. Take out the old thermostat and replace it with the new one.
3Remove the old gasket. Scrape out any pieces that are stuck to the housing and clean the area thoroughly. Lubricate the new gasket and place it in the housing where the old one was.
4Reassemble the housing and tighten the bolts so that no coolant leaks out. Be careful not to over-tighten them; otherwise, you could break the housing.
5Fill the coolant reservoir with a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water to the "Full" line.
