How to Remove the Window Winder on a 2002 S10

By the 2002 model year, the 20-year-old S-10 had had a good run, but the Colorado, the S-10s replacement, was breathing down its neck. The 2002 S-10 did have power windows available, but only on the LS trim level, and even at that they were optional. This means that most S-10 owners had to manually roll up and down the windows, using a plastic crank, which some people call a window winder. Removing the window winder on the 2002 S-10 is slightly tricky, as it has a hidden clip that requires a special tool to remove.

Removal

Roll the window all the way up.

Slide a window handle clip removal tool between the circular part of the window crank and its plastic bearing plate.

Pivot the window handle clip removal tool so it is directly behind the handle part of the window crank. Press the window handle clip removal tool inward until you feel it contact the window crank clip.

Hold your hand under the circular part of the window crank and press the window handle clip removal tool inward sharply to disengage the window handle clip. Catch the window handle clip with your hand if it falls out.

Pull the window crank and its bearing plate from the regulator shaft.

Installation

Press the window handle clip into its slot on the rear of the window handle, with its open end facing the handle part of the crank, until it clicks into place.

Slide the bearing plate onto the regulator shaft. Align the splined hole on the rear of the window handle with the splines on the regulator shaft.

Turn the window handle so that its top points toward the front edge of the door and press the handle onto the regulator shaft firmly until the window handle clip snaps into place on the shaft. Pull outward on the window handle to assure it engaged firmly.
