The 2006 Volkswagen GTI uses a paper canister style of oil filter. The recommended weight of oil is the 0W30 Mobile 1 synthetic, though other weights can safely be used as well. The synthetic is used because it does not smoke when burned. The GTI does, as a rule, go through a quart of oil every 1,500 miles under normal circumstances. The mechanic's wrench on the dash lights up when oil change service is due. The light needs to be reset after the service is accomplished.

Instructions

    1

Raise the front of the car and place jack stands under the side subframes. Lower the car to rest on the stands. Remove the lower splash shield by taking out the two bolts on each side of the shield with a socket.

    2

Place the drain pan under the oil filter housing located on the driver's side front of the engine. It is a black plastic cylinder on the side of the block. Use the large 39 mm socket to turn the housing counterclockwise to remove it. Allow the oil to drain into the pan, and pull the paper cartridge out.

    3

Install a new O-ring on the housing (included with the cartridge) and insert the paper cartridge. Thread the housing on clockwise, and torque it down to 7 foot-pounds of torque.

    4

Move the drain pan under the oil pan drain plug. Remove the plug with a socket and allow it to drain completely. Replace the oil drain plug, and tighten it down until it is snug. There is no need to have torque on this plug ---the plugs strip easily, so don't over-tighten them.

    5

Pull the drain pan from under the car. Replace the spash shield and tighten the bolts. Lower the car to the ground. Open the hood and remove the oil filler cap. Add 4.3 quarts of oil and replace the oil cap.
