A faulty water pump can cause overheating or coolant leaks and may lead to engine damage. The water pump in a 1999 Mazda Protege is driven by the timing belt, and is often replaced when the timing belt is replaced to prevent future problems. Most auto-parts shops will have replacement pumps in stock or will order one if needed.

Drain the engine coolant into a container that holds at least 6.3 qts. by twisting the plastic drain plug on the rear of the radiator.
2Unbolt the air cleaner assembly. The assembly is on the right side of the engine compartment, to the rear of the battery. A single bolt on the right side holds it in place.
3Squeeze the tabs on the air intake hose clamp where the hose connects to the engine and pull the hose loose. Remove the air cleaner assembly and hose.
4Remove the insulating shroud from the exhaust manifold on the front of the engine. It is held on by four bolts.
5Remove the timing belt.
6Unbolt the water pump from the right side of the engine block. Unbolt the flange connecting the water line to the pump. Remove the pump.
7Replace the pump. Installation is the reverse of removal.
