How to Replace the Plug Wire Coil for a 2002 Mazda Tribute V6

The 2002 Mazda Tribute base model (DX) was designed with a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The engine does not have a distributor; instead the current for all four spark plugs is controlled by the ECM through a single coil pack. The coil pack is located on the side of the engine. Removal and installation will require no special tools.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Lift the vehicle hood and support it with the hood prop rod. Turn the two plastic retainers counterclockwise and remove the plastic cover from the engine (if equipped)

    2

Trace the spark plug wires to the left of the engine where the ignition coil is located. Note the location for each wire on individual pieces of tape (one for each wire) and wrap the tape around the plug wire.

    3

Remove the plug wires from the ignition coil and set them aside. Disconnect the engine wiring harness from the coil pack plug.

    4

Remove the bolt in each corner of the coil pack with the socket and ratchet and remove the coil pack from the engine.

Installation

    5

Set the coil pack into position. Install the four mounting bolts and tighten them to 53 inch-pounds with the small torque wrench.

    6

Plug the engine wiring harness into the electrical connector for the coil pack. It should make a click sound when it is properly seated.

    7

Plug each spark plug wire into its terminal position on the coil pack and remove the tape from around each plug wire.

    8

Place the engine cover over the engine and turn the plastic retainers clockwise to secure the cover to the engine (if equipped). Close the vehicle hood.
