The role of your vehicle's radiator is to keep your engine cool. When you have been on the road for a long time, your engine can easily overheat --- especially on a hot summer day. You can install a transmission cooler, which is connected to the radiator, to help keep your car engine running smoothly. You don't need a lot of tools, and you can pick up a transmission-cooler installation kit at your local hardware store.
Instructions
- 1
Inspect your transmission cooler kit and make sure it is ready to use. The kit should include mounting hardware and plumping components, washers and bolts.
2Prepare the vehicle. Park on a stable surface and remove the key from the ignition. Let the engine cool for a few hours. Raise the hood and disconnect the negative (black) battery terminal. Use support jacks to raise the front end of your vehicle.
3Get under the vehicle and place a drip pan under the transmission to catch any fluid that might escape. Raise the hood of the vehicle. Locate the lower air dam at the base of the radiator. The radiator is located in front of the engine and has a latch to keep it closed. Use a wrench to remove 6 to 8 bolts to detach the air dam.
4Attach the cooler. Find the adhesive pad in your transmission cooler installation kit. Rip off the adhesive backing and stick the adhesive pad onto the side of the radiator. Stick the transmission cooler to the adhesive pad. If your kit has a mounting rod, insert it between the radiator and the cooler's mounting flanges per the kit instructions.
5Screw the hose fittings included in the kit onto the cooler's inlet and outlet ports. Use Teflon tape to seal the threads on the fittings.
6Run the lines from the fittings to the radiator as specified in the kit directions. There are two fluid lines that run from the transmission to the right side of the radiator: the feed line is on top; the return line is underneath it.
7Reattach the air dam to the base of the radiator with the bolts you loosened in Step 3.
