How to Fix a Heat Shield Rattle in a 99 Chevy Blazer

The S10 Blazer was introduced in 1983. In 1996 it became known simply as the Blazer when Chevrolet renamed the full-size Blazer the Tahoe. The 1999 Chevrolet Blazer was equipped with a 4.3-liter V-6 engine, capable of producing 190 horsepower. There are two main types of heat shields on the 1999 Blazer. One type is crimped or spot-welded onto the exhaust, such as the heat shield on a catalytic converter. The second type is bolted directly onto the bottom of the body on the truck, such as the gas tank heat shield.

Instructions

Body Mounted Heat Shield Rattle

    1

Raise the front or rear of the truck, depending on where the rattle is, using a 2-ton jack. Place jack stands beneath the frame rails to support the truck.

    2

Insert a self-tapping 1/4-inch sheet metal screw into the nut driver at the end of your drill or electric screwdriver.

    3

Hold the heat shield against the bottom of the truck with one hand, while drilling the self-tapping screw into the heat shield and the truck. Repeat this step to install four new screws to hold the entire heat shield in place against the bottom of the truck.

Heat Shield Attached to the Exhaust

    4

Raise front of the truck and place jack stands beneath the frame rails.

    5

Cut the heat shield away from the exhaust completely. Use tin snips or a die grinder to cut the shield. For a spot welded shield, grind the weld until the shield is release from the exhaust, then cut the shield in half. Separating the shield into two halves makes removal much easier. Be careful not to penetrate the body of the exhaust pipe or converter.

    6

Install an aftermarket exhaust heat shield around the exhaust component. Use a metal shield rather than insulated heat wrap. Strap the heat shield in place with the straps provided, and use a ratchet and socket to tighten the shield straps. If the heat shield on the converter is rattling, make sure you replace both the upper and lower heat shields.
