How to Install a Headlight Assembly on a BMW X5

If the headlight assembly on your BMW X5 malfunctions or incurs damages in an accident, replace it immediately. Headlamps on your X5 are some of the most important safety features of your vehicle and can involve you in a major accident if you drive with a faulty headlamp. In addition, the police may issue a citation for driving with a broken headlamp. Thankfully, the installation process is simple and only takes half an hour.

Place the BMW X5 in park on a level surface and engage the parking brake.

Raise the X5's hood and locate the battery in the rear corner of the vehicle's engine compartment.

Use a socket wrench to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.

Remove the cover from the rear of the headlamp assembly and pull on its electrical wiring connector to disconnect it from the headlamp.

Unscrew the four Torx screws securing the headlamp to the engine compartment with a Torx screwdriver. Pull the headlamp assembly out of the vehicle. Jiggle the assembly back and forth to loosen it.

Place the new assembly into the vehicle and reinstall the four Torx screws to secure. Reconnect the electrical wiring connector and reattach the cover. Reconnect the X5's battery and close the hood.
