The 1993 Ford Explorer is equipped with a 4.0-liter V-6 engine, a four-speed automatic, or five-speed manual transmission, and two- or four-wheel-drive. The ignition switch on the Explorer is mounted in the steering column. Unlike some vehicles that require replacement of the entire lock and switch assembly, the ignition lock cylinder on the Explorer can be removed from the switch. Best of all, no disassembly is required to replace it.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Park the Explorer on a level surface and set the parking brake.

    2

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a ratchet and socket. Disconnect the positive cable. Wait at least two minutes before proceeding to allow the air bags to be disabled.

    3

With the wheels pointed straight ahead, turn the lock one position forward to the on position. Looking at the lower steering column cover, you will see a small hole directly below the ignition key. Insert a 1/8-inch drill bit into the hole and push up on the lock cylinder pin. Pull the cylinder out of the lock housing.

Installation

    4

Install the new cylinder by pushing in the pin on the new lock cylinder and sliding the new cylinder into the housing. Make sure the pin pops back into place before turning the key..

    5

Turn the key to the Lock position, then test the key in all positions.

    6

Install the positive and negative battery cables.
