There have been many important improvements to automobiles throughout history, but none have had a greater impact on comfort than climate control. The first hot-water car heater came about in 1926 (though other failed heater experiments had occurred prior to this year). Fourteen years later, air conditioning made its way into the first production vehicle to have used this advancement, a Packard. Throughout the years, these systems have become more advanced, but the basic principles remain the same. The 2003 Ram 1500 came standard with heat and air conditioning, and it used a small electric blower motor with a fan to circulate the warm or cool air throughout the cabin. Replacing this blower motor is a fairly straightforward task.
Instructions
- 1
Adjust the passengers seat as far back as it will go. Look under the passengers side of the dashboard and find the blower motor (the circular electronic motor) connected to the heating and air-conditioning box.
2Press and hold the unlocking button on the blower motors wiring harness and pull it away from the Rams wiring harness.
3Remove the three screws securing the blower motor to the heating and air-conditioning box, using a ratchet and socket. Carefully pull the blower motor and fan wheel downward and out of the heating and air-conditioning box; some repositioning of the motor is needed to clear other components as you remove the motor.
4Line up the blower motor (which comes as a full assembly with the fan wheel) with the hole in the heating and air-conditioning box and insert the blower motor into the box.
5Tighten the three blower motor-retaining screws to 1 to 2 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and socket.
6Plug the blower motors wiring harness into the Rams wiring harness.
