4.0 Lexus Timing Belt Replacement Tips

Replacing the timing belt on the 4.0 Lexus with a 1UZ-FE engine isn't an easy job and isn't recommended for beginners. However, those with some mechanical experience will be able to successfully to do the job with preparation and a few tips. Replacing the timing belt takes about 4 to 9 hours depending on the tools you have available and your prior experience.

Necessary Tools

Make sure you have the tools you need before starting to replace the timing belt in your 4.0 Lexus and that you know how to use them. Some of the tools you should have are metric sockets with 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch drives, 10mm to 22mm sockets, a 10mm hex allen key socket, a crankshaft pulley puller and several torque wrenches. An impact wrench can make the job easier.

Use Sandwich Bags

While taking apart your Lexus to access the timing belt, use regular sandwich bags that are sealable for keeping track of parts. As you take each set of parts off, place them in separate sandwich bags. Label each sandwich bag with a felt-tip marker so that you know exactly what is in each bag. This makes putting the Lexus back together more convenient.

Radiator Drain Plugs

Besides opening the radiator drain cock to drain out the old coolant, open the two side drain plugs that are located on each side of the engine block. This allows the coolant to completely drain out of the engine and will help you to avoid mess when you remove the water pump. You will need a 10mm socket to open the drain plugs.

Crankshaft Pulley Puller Tool

Buy a crankshaft pulley puller tool or rent one from your local auto parts store. The tool should have a nose cone insert included with it to install on the end of the shaft. The nose cone insert is necessary so that you don't damage the crankshaft threads.
