Some automotive experts call the Chevy HHR a PT Cruiser copy, while others call it a mixture of Chevys failed SSR experiment and a classic Suburban. No matter the experts opinion, the HHR is unlike any other vehicle in Chevys lineup. The 2006 model year was the debut year for the HHR, and Chevy fitted it with a standard AM-FM, six-speaker stereo system with a CD player. Installing a stereo in a 2006 HHR is not an overly difficult task, but it does require the aid of the dealership to synchronize your new radio to the HHRs body control module.

Instructions

Removing the Radio

    1

Wrap the metal tip of a flat-head screwdriver with a thin coat of duct tape for protection.

    2

Insert the blade of the flat-head screwdriver between the radio bezel the trim piece surrounding the radio and climate control knobs and the dashboard. Pry around the perimeter of the radio bezel to disengage its retaining clips. Pull the bezel off the dashboard.

    3

Remove the four screws holding the climate-control plate with a ratchet and 9/32-inch socket. Pull the climate-control knobs from the dashboard, but leave the wiring harnesses on the rear of it attached.

    4

Unscrew the four radio retaining screws with a ratchet and 9/32-inch socket. Pull the radio from the dash until you can access the wiring on the rear of the radio. Press and hold the unlock button on the radios wiring harness, and pull the wiring harness from the rear of the radio. Pull the antenna cable from the radio with a slight twisting motion. Remove the radio.

Installing the Radio

    5

Plug the wiring harness into the rear of the radio; listen for it to click into place. Plug the antenna wire into its receptacle on the rear of the radio.

    6

Slide the radio into the dashboard, and tighten its four retaining screws to 1 to 2 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and 9/32-inch socket. Slide the climate control plate into the dashboard below the radio and tighten its four retaining screws to 1 to 2 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and 9/32-inch socket.

    7

Position the radio bezel on the dashboard, lining up the metal clips on the rear of it with the slots in the dashboard. Press the bezel onto the dashboard until the clips snap into place.

    8

Take your HHR to a local Chevrolet dealerships service department to have the radio synchronized with your vehicle. This requires a special tool and training that only a professional should perform.
