Ford added the F-150 to the F-series lineup in the 1975 model year, to slot between between the existing F-100 and F-250. In 1984, the F-150 replaced the F-100 altogether. In 2004, Ford completely redesigned the F-150, dropping the rounded shape it adopted in 1997, and giving the F-150 a more rugged appearance. This redesign also brought about all-new headlight assemblies that were more square-shaped than the previous generation. The 2008 model year was the final year for this generation, as Ford redesigned the F-150 for the 2009 model year. Replacing the headlight bulbs in the 2008 F-150 requires removal of the headlight assembly.
Instructions
- 1
Open the F-150's hood and pull back the rubber cover over the inner part of the headlight assembly, exposing the two bolts behind it. Remove these two bolts and the bolt on top of the headlight assembly, using a ratchet and socket.
2Pull upward on the plastic tab on the top-center of the headlight and pull the headlight toward you to disengage the retaining clip.
3Unplug the wiring harnesses plugging into the rear of the headlight by pressing each harness' locking button and pulling it from the headlight assembly. Remove the headlight assembly from the F-150.
4Look on the rear of the headlight assembly and locate the two bulb sockets. Grab the socket of the failed bulb and twist it counterclockwise to unlock it. Pull the socket from the headlight assembly.
5Insert a new H13 bulb into the socket, lining up the tabs on the bulb with the notches in the socket. Make certain not to touch the glass part of the bulb, as the oils left on the bulb by your hands may cause premature bulb failure. Insert and lock the socket into the headlight.
6Plug the wiring harnesses back into the rear of the headlight assembly and set the headlight assembly on the front of the F-150. Press the headlight assembly until the retaining clip and locking tab snaps into place.
7Reinstall the three headlight assembly bolts and tighten them to 3 to 4 foot-pounds with a ratchet and socket.
8Close the F-150's hood.
