Introduced in 1986, the Nissan Pathfinder is a sports utility vehicle that has undergone numerous cosmetic and mechanical changes since then, including many updates to the original 3-speed transmission.
Considerations
The removal procedure will differ depending on whether your Pathfinder is a four- or two-wheel drive model and whether the transmission is automatic or manual. Removal of the transmission will also necessitate disassembly of the shifting lever, the clutch slave cylinder (if the transmission is manual), and possibly the front and rear exhaust pipes.
Warning
Drain the transmission fluid and ensure the engine is cool to the touch before attempting disassembly. Use a transmission jack to support the transmission during removal. Never climb under a vehicle without proper support.
Alternatives
If your Pathfinder is still under warranty, consult with your Nissan dealer to ascertain whether transmission removal will void your coverage. Alternatively, your dealer can diagnose your transmission problem and determine whether the cost of replacement is covered.
