The Seville is a luxury automobile made by the Cadillac division of General Motors. Cadillac uses a brake system on all of its vehicles that incorporates a caliper and rotor design for maximum clamping force to quickly slow the vehicle. Calipers can bind as the pistons inside them corrode or fail due to extended use. The only way to fix the problem is to replace the caliper.

Instructions

    1

Place the socket end of the tire wrench over the front wheel lug nuts. Turn the wrench counterclockwise to loosen the nuts; give the wrench a 1/8 to 1/4 turn.

    2

Jack the car off the ground using the factory jack point behind the radiator.

    3

Place a jack stand under each of the front pinch welds, which are located under the driver- and passenger-side front doors. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.

    4

Remove the lug nuts and pull the wheel off the hub assembly.

    5

Check the brake caliper by having an assistant get in the Seville and press on the brake pedal. Look at the pistons on the caliper. If the pistons do not move or if one appears to move excessively, the caliper has seized and needs to be replaced.

    6

Remove the connection from the caliper to the brake hose. Place an open-ended wrench over the bottom nut of the brake line connection, then place another open-ended wrench over the upper nut. Turn the nuts in opposite directions to separate the brake hose from the caliper. Brake fluid will leak, but this is OK. Let the brake fluid drain into the catch pan.

    7

Remove the upper and lower caliper mounting bolts and remove the caliper.

    8

Install a new loaded caliper. The loaded caliper has brake pads already installed in it. Connect the brake hose, line up the caliper mounting bracket holes and bolt the caliper to the hub assembly.
