How to Fix a Starter in a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Grand Cherokees combined traditional Jeep off-roading capabilities with some creature comforts to rival other makes of the same class of vehicle. Styling may have been considered a bit frumpy in 1997, but this Jeep reigned supreme anytime paved roads were abandoned for work or play. The 4.0 liter six-banger base engine supplied ample torque for conquering rugged terrain or towing challenges. The engine configuration allows easy access to most components, and the starter motor is no exception. Despite the generous ground clearance of more than 8 inches, it is still necessary to raise the front of the Jeep to gain sufficient elbow room for the task at hand.

A good selection of ratchet handles and extensions makes it easier to replace the starter.
A good selection of ratchet handles and extensions makes it easier to replace the starter.

Place the transmission gear selector in the "Park" position and set the parking brake. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. Raise the front of the vehicle with the jack. Support the front of the vehicle securely on the jack stands. Select locations for the stands that do not impose on the work site.

    2

Label the wires that attach to the starter to aid exact restoration, if necessary. Use socket wrenches on extensions to remove the nuts that secure the wire terminals to the starter. Remove the upper starter motor attaching bolt that threads into the starter motor from the front of the vehicle. You may find it easier to access the upper bolt from under the hood, rather than from under the Jeep. Support the starter motor in place from underneath while removing the lower attaching bolt. The lower bolt passes through the starter and threads into the transmission bellhousing.

    3

Support the new or rebuilt starter motor in place and screw the lower attaching bolt in by hand until a snug fit is attained. Install the upper attaching bolt, and tighten it with a wrench. Tighten the lower attaching bolt in the same manner, and restore the wiring connections at the starter and battery. Test the operation of the replacement starter while the Jeep is still on the jack stands, in case the part or workmanship needs revisiting.
