Your 1993 Lincoln Town Car came in one of three different trim levels is equipped with a 4.6-liter V-8 and a four-speed automatic transmission. The front and rear suspension make use of a stabilizer bar to help limit the amount of unequal movement between the wheels. Both stabilizer bars are secured to the frame by two bushings, clamps and a sway bar link at each end. You should also replace the sway bar bushings and sway bar links, when you replace either sway bar.

Instructions

Front Sway Bar Replacement

    1

Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Lift the front of the car into the air with the floor jack and place the jack stands under the front frame rails. Lower the floor jack until the vehicle rests securely on the jack stands.

    2

Lay down under the vehicle. Remove the nuts securing each stabilizer bar link to the left and right suspension with the socket and ratchet. Remove the bolts securing the left frame stabilizer clamp with the socket and ratchet. Remove the bolts securing the right rail stabilizer clamp. Lower the stabilizer bar, bushings and links from the vehicle.

    3

Slide the new bushings onto the new stabilizer link and align them in the same position as the old stabilizer bar bushings. Lift the new stabilizer bar and bushings to the frame. Install the mounting clamps and hand-tighten the bolts.

    4

Install the stabilizer links to each side of the stabilizer bar and loosely tighten the nuts to between 41 and 55 foot-pounds of torque with the torque wrench. Install the stabilizer links to their respective locations on the left and right suspension; tighten the nut to between 9 and12 foot-pounds. Tighten the stabilizer clamp bolts to between 40 and 55 foot-pounds.

    5

Lift the front of the vehicle off of the jack stands with the floor jack and remove the jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Remove the floor jack.

Rear Stabilizer Bar Replacement

    6

Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Place the wheel chocks around the front wheels. Open the trunk lid and look on the right inner quarter panel to find the air suspension switch. Press the switch to turn the air suspension off.

    7

Lift the rear of the vehicle into the air with the floor jack and place the jack stands under the rear frame rails. Lower the floor jack until the vehicle rests securely on the jack stands. The rear wheels should be completely off of the ground. Place two more jack stands under the rear axle to provide support.

    8

Loosen the nut for each sway bar link with socket and ratchet; using an open-end wrench on the bolt head to prevent counter rotation. Remove the sway bar links and lay their components out on the ground in the order they were removed to have a visual aid during assembly.

    9

Remove the bolts securing the stabilizer bar and bushings to each frame rail. Lower the stabilizer bar and remove it from under the vehicle.

    10

Slide the new stabilizer bar bushings onto the stabilizer bar, aligning them in the same position as the bushings on the old stabilizer bar. Lift the stabilizer bar to the frame rails and install the mounting clamps. Tighten the clamp bolts hand tight.

    11

Place a washer onto the link bolt followed by a bushing. Place the link bolt through the hole at the end of the stabilizer bar. Install another bushing followed by a washer and the spacer sleeve. Place another washer followed by a bushing onto the link bolt. Install the bolt through the mounting hole on the axle. Install the final bushing and washer, followed by the lock nut. Tighten the nut hand-tight. Repeat for the opposite link.

    12

Tighten the stabilizer bar link bolts and nuts to between 13 and 20 foot-pounds. Tighten the stabilizer mounting clamps to between 25 and 34 foot-pounds. Lift the rear of the vehicle off of the jack stands and remove all four jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the rear of the vehicle to the ground and remove the floor jacks. Turn on the switch for the air suspension and close the trunk lid.
