How to Replace a Volvo V70 Radiator

The radiator of the Volvo V70 is attached to mounting brackets that allow the radiator to be removed without a lot of trouble. There is, however, a plastic shroud over the top that needs to be removed first. Any radiator can occasionally become damaged or get clogged, requiring that the tank be removed in order to replace the unit. You can save time and money by replacing the radiator yourself.

Remove the Radiator

Unfasten the negative battery cable of the Volvo V70 from the battery post with an open-end wrench to prevent electric shock while replacing the radiator. Remove the plastic cowling over the top of the radiator with a screwdriver.

Place a drain pan on the ground underneath the drain valve of the radiator. The drain valve is at the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side of the tank.

Take the cap off the top of the radiator and set it out of the way. Remove the cap from the coolant overflow reservoir on the passenger side of the engine compartment and unfasten the rubber coolant overflow hose from the top of the radiator.

Open the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator with a pair of pliers and let the radiator drain completely. Loosen the screws on the screw clamps around the upper and lower radiator hoses with a screwdriver.

Pull the upper and lower radiator hoses off the metal flanges in the back of the radiator tank. Unplug the electrical wire connector from the cooling fan electrical plug and unfasten the screws that secure the cooling fan shroud to the back of the radiator with a screwdriver.

Detach the mounting bolts that secure the radiator to the mounting brackets with a socket wrench and lift the radiator tank away from the brackets. Remove the radiator from the Volvo V70 engine compartment.

Replace the Radiator

Position the new radiator in the mounting brackets and secure the tank with the mounting bolts. Attach the cooling fan shroud to the radiator with screws and plug the electrical wiring connector into the cooling fan electrical plug.

Slide the upper and lower radiator hoses onto the metal flanges in the back of the tank and tighten the screw clamps around the hoses with a screwdriver. Verify that the drain plug is closed at the bottom of the radiator and fill the radiator with a mixture of half coolant and half water.

Attach the rubber overflow hose to the top of the radiator and place the cap back on the radiator. Put the cap on the coolant overflow reservoir and attach the plastic cowling over the top of the radiator.

Connect the negative battery cable to the Volvo V70 battery post. Dispose of the drained coolant at your local recyclers or automotive supply center.
