The 1998 Chevrolet Astro Van was equipped with a 4.3 liter six-cylinder engine. A single air-cooled radiator was used to reduce the temperature of the coolant that circulates throughout the engine. The coolant enters the radiator from the top and flows downward through a series of tubes. If these tubes become corroded or clogged, the radiator will not operate efficiently and the engine will overheat. Whether the radiator is repair or replaced, it must first be removed.
Instructions
- 1
Drain the radiator coolant into a suitable container by removing the drain bolt at the bottom of the radiator with a wrench.
2Loosen the clamp that secures the air cleaner assembly to the engine with a standard screwdriver, then lift the assembly off the engine.
3Remove the bolts that secure the upper fan shroud to the top of the radiator with a wrench, and lift the shroud off the radiator.
4Loosen the clamps that secure the two radiator hoses to the radiator with a standard screwdriver and pull the hoses off the radiator.
5Remove the retaining clips that secure the two transmission cooler lines to the base of the radiator and pull the lines away from the radiator. Insert a metal pick between the base of the clip and the cooler line fitting, then pull downward on the clip to remove it.
6Remove the retaining clips that secure the two engine oil cooler lines to the base of the radiator and pull the lines away from the radiator. Remove the clips in the same manner used to remove the transmission cooler line clips.
7Lift the radiator out of the engine bay.
