Germans, as a rule, don't like to make working on anything especially difficult -- but neither are they known for calling for the typical tools, or for doing things the usual way. Take the Jetta, for instance: while most automakers would have you take half the car's front end apart to replace a turn signal assembly, VW makes things simpler, if a bit stranger, by building the assembly so that you need nothing more than your two hands.
Instructions
- 1
Pop your hood and look down behind the back of the headlights. If you look toward the outer portion of the headlight, you'll see the wiring harness that connects to the turn signal bulb. Unplug the wiring harness, grasp the bulb and turn it counter-clockwise. After one-quarter turn, you should feel the bulb pop loose; wiggle the turn signal bulb backward out of the hole.
2Look for the spring on the inside of the turn signal housing. This spring, and the hook on its end, keep the turn signal housing tight against the car. Pull on the spring and unhook it from the turn signal housing. Tilt the housing down and forward, then pull it off the car.
3Aligning the tabs on the back of the turn signal with the guides on the headlight assembly to re-install it onto the Jetta. Once you have the assembly aligned, pull the retainer spring toward the rear of the car and hook it onto to the turn signal housing. Grasp the turn signal bulb by its base, then push it into the turn signal. Twist the bulb clockwise until it locks into place, then plug in the wiring harness.
