The Ford Contour was produced from 1995 to 2000. The 1996 Ford Contour was available with the option of three different engines: a 2.0-liter DOHC 4-cylinder; a 2.0-liter, "Bi-Fuel" DOHC 4-cylinder; and a 2.5-liter, DOHC 24-Valve V-6. All three of these engines are mounted across the engine compartment, sideways. Removal of the radiator fan is nearly identical for all three engine types; however, the clearance between the engine and the fan motor is slightly smaller in the V-6 engine compartment.
Instructions
- 1
Open the hood of the Contour. Remove the air intake resonator support bolts, using a 1/4-inch drive ratchet and socket -- the bolts are located toward the center of the radiator, on the inside lip of the radiator core support. Pull the air intake resonator free from the radiator core support.
2Unplug the electrical connector from the rear of the fan, by separating the two pieces of the connector. Remove the plastic retainers that fasten the fan wires to the fan housing, then push them aside, out of the way of the fan. Remove the ground cable tie-down bolt from the passenger side fender, using the ratchet and socket -- the bolt is located on the far passenger side of the engine compartment.
3Pull the fan clear of the radiator, by hand; while pulling the fan upward, twist the assembly to the left to release the fan from the installation guide points -- the fan should be pulled out with your body facing straight toward the front of the engine compartment. If you encounter any resistance, double-check that you have removed all of the mounting clips for the wiring harness.
4Installation of the cooling fan is the opposite of the removal process. Tighten all of the bolts for this project, so that they are snug only. Applying torque to either the ground wire or air cleaner resonator bolts can cause the fixtures to crack or break.
