Occasionally, your 2000 BMW 540i radiator may become damaged or get clogged, requiring that you remove the tank to get it repaired or replaced. The radiator of the BMW 540i is attached with bolts to the vertical support brackets that secure it to the vehicle frame. Removing the radiator tank is a job that can be done without too much trouble in about an hour or two. You can remove the tank yourself and save money.

Instructions

    1

Unfasten the negative battery cable of the 2000 BMW 540i from the battery post with an open-end wrench to prevent electric shock while removing the radiator. Place a drain pan on the ground below the drain valve on the passenger side of the radiator tank.

    2

Remove the cap from the top of the radiator tank and set it out of the way. Take the cap off the coolant overflow reservoir on the passenger side of the engine compartment and detach the rubber coolant overflow hose from the top of the radiator.

    3

Open the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator tank with a pair of pliers and let the coolant drain completely out of the radiator. Unfasten the screw clamps on the radiator hoses at the top and bottom of the radiator with a screwdriver.

    4

Take the radiator hoses off the metal flanges on the back of the radiator and detach the cooling fan shroud from the back of the radiator with a screwdriver. Move the cooling fan shroud back from the radiator and unfasten the bolts that secure the radiator to the support brackets on the vehicle with a socket wrench.

    5

Lift the radiator tank up and remove it from the 2000 BMW 540i engine compartment.
