3T40 Intermediate Servo Installation

Installing a 3T40 Intermediate Servo is a matter of rebuilding the existing servo by replacing the springs, piston shaft and O-rings. The intermediate servo is located on the side of the transmission housing and can be installed in about an hour with some basic tools. The 3T40 Intermediate Servo is designed to help move the transmission bands at the right times so the transmission operates properly.

Locate the 3T40 Intermediate Servo on the side of the transmission housing. The servo sits behind the circular plate in the center of the driver's side of the transmission where the housing is mounted to the vehicle frame.

Lift the snap ring off of the servo cover plate with a screwdriver, prying the ring out of the plate and setting it aside. Lift the servo cover plate up with a pair of channel lock pliers just enough to get access to the rubber O-ring on the side of the cover plate.

Cut the rubber O-ring with a utility knife and pull the O-ring out from under the cover plate with needle nose pliers. Remove the cover plate off the transmission housing and lift the 4th apply piston out of the housing.

Take the inner housing, 2nd apply piston and servo piston shaft out of the transmission housing with the needle nose pliers. Lift the 2nd apply piston off the inner housing and remove the C-clip from the end of the servo piston shaft with the needle nose pliers.

Remove the inner housing from off the servo piston shaft and remove the rubber O-rings and springs from the assembly. Replace the springs and O-rings on the servo piston shaft from the servo rebuilding kit and place the 2nd apply piston and inner housing on the new servo piston shaft the same way they came off.

Insert the servo assembly into the transmission housing and place a new O-ring over the base of the 4th apply piston. Set the 4th apply piston into the transmission housing and fasten the new snap ring around the edge of the 4th apply piston with a screwdriver to secure the 3T40 Intermediate Servo to the transmission.
