How to Repair a Digital Climate Control Light

Some cars contain standard climate controls with a slide to adjust the temperature. Newer car models contain digital climate controls, which adjust the temperature of the car with buttons. The digital climate control unit displays the temperature in numbers, which are illuminated by LED lights. If this light blows out, it is impossible to tell what temperature your climate controller is set to, and it is quite expensive to have replaced. If you have some background in electronics and a few spare hours, you can replace the climate control light using just a few materials.

Instructions

    1

Remove the climate control/air-conditioning unit from your car. VQ Power recommends removing it in the same manner as you would remove a car stereo.

    2

Unplug the white connector from the back of the climate control unit and unplug the tubing.

    3

Open the back of the climate control unit using a flathead screwdriver. Remove the four bulbs from the climate control unit using a Phillips screwdriver. Carefully put all of the screws to the side so that they are not lost.

    4

Cut off the rings around the bottom of the four LED lights using a utility knife. Slightly roughen the surface of the bulbs using sandpaper. This will allow more light to escape from the bulb, since LEDs are much dimmer then the bulbs originally used.

    5

Keep track of which wire is the positive and which is the negative protruding from the LED bulb. The negative lead is attached to a small dish inside of the LED bulb. If you fear you may forget, make a small minus sign on the side of the bulb that contains the negative wire.

    6

Remove the brown plastic holder from the old bulb by unwrapping the wires from the bottom of the holder and sliding the lamp out.

    7

Slide the LED leads into the holes of the brown plastic holder.

    8

Cut off the excess copper wiring and wrap the wire in the same manner the old bulb wires were wrapped at the bottom of the holder.

    9

Install the bulbs where you removed the others from the climate control unit.

    10

Screw the bulbs back in and reassemble the climate control unit. Place the climate control unit back in its place and secure it in using the screws you removed.
