Installing a new speedometer gear in the AODE transmission is a fairly straightforward process. This gear is connected to the speedometer sensor and is driven by the output shaft inside the transmission. The speedometer sensor and gear are located at the back of the transmission and are easily accessible from under the vehicle without removing the transmission. Removing the old speedometer gear requires removal of the speed sensor as well as the removal of the speedometer gear from the sensor.

Instructions

    1

Lift the front of the vehicle off the ground with the floor jack. Place two of the jack stands under the front frame rails of the vehicle. Lower the floor jack until the front of the vehicle rests securely on the jack stands.

    2

Lift the rear of the vehicle with the floor jack. Place the remaining two jack stands under the rear frame rails of the vehicle. Lower the rear of the vehicle down until it rests securely on the jack stands. Shake the car to ensure that it rests securely on all four jack stands.

    3

Trace the wiring harness that leads all the way to the rear of the transmission. The plug will be located at the rear of the transmission on the very top. It will be the only plug and wire harness that goes that far back on the transmission. It is also identifiable by the fact that it is connected directly to the speedometer sensor.

    4

Unplug the wire harness from the speedometer sensor by pressing down on the tab and sliding the harness out of the connector on the speedometer sensor. Using the wrench set, remove the hexbolt that is located next to the speedometer sensor from the metal ring that secures the speedometer sensor into the transmission.

    5

Lift the speedometer sensor and gear assembly out of the transmission by gently prying up on it by hand. Remove the sir clip that goes around the speedometer sensor shaft and under the speedometer gear with the pliers. Slide the speedometer gear off the sensor shaft.

    6

Slide the new speedometer gear onto the sensor shaft and secure it by placing the sir clip back into place. Slide the speedometer sensor back into the transmission. If it does not initially sit flush with the transmission, turn it back and forth slightly so that the speedometer gear splines properly with the output shaft and tighten the mounting bolt with the wrench set. Plug the wire harness back into the speedometer sensor.

    7

Raise the rear of the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack. Remove the jack stands from under the vehicle and lower the vehicle onto the ground. Raise the front of the vehicle off the jack stands with the floor jack and remove the jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
