The 2007 Ford Escort was available in 10 different trim levels between the three-door hatchback and the sedan. The 2007 Focus was equipped with two types of side view mirrors or exterior mirrors; a breakaway mirror; and a stationary mirror. The removal procedures for the stationary mirror are easier than for the breakaway mirrors. Many people replace their mirrors because of damage. The mirror parts are fragile, and should be treated with excess care.

Instructions

    1

Rotate the exterior mirror glass completely inward, if your Focus is equipped with breakaway mirrors. Pull the mirror glass outward from the side of the car to remove the glass from the mirror. If your Focus is not equipped with breakaway mirrors, proceed to Step 3.

    2

Push the exterior mirror cover downward away from the mirror. Remove the exterior mirror cover from the mirror.

    3

Open the door with the mirror you are working on and sit in the seat next to that door. Roll the window down completely. Remove the interior mirror switch plate if you are working on the driver's side mirror. The passenger side just has a triangular plate. Remove the screw from either type of plate using a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the triangular plate or switch plate horizontally off of the door frame, using a flat-head screwdriver to assist if needed. Remove the switch plate electrical connector by hand.

    4

Remove the mirror mounting bolt from the inside of the door frame using a ratchet and socket. Hold the exterior mirror in your outward facing hand while you remove the mounting bolt. Do not let the mirror fall freely, or it could damage your car door. Pull the mirror off of the car horizontally once the bolt has been removed.

    5

Install the body of the new mirror against the door frame. Install the center mounting bolt by hand to start it to ensure proper threading. Tighten the center mounting bolt snug from the inside of the door frame while holding the mirror in place with your free hand. Step out of the car and make sure the mirror is seated properly on the outside of the door. Loosen the bolt a half-turn and make adjustments if needed. Tighten the bolt to 8 foot-pounds using a 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and socket.

    6

Install the mirror electrical connectors. Install the switch plate or triangular plate onto the door frame. Tighten the mounting screw snug with your screwdriver. Do not over-tighten the screw or you will break either type of plate. Use the switch plate on the driver's side of the Focus to rotate the mirror you are working on, completely inward. If your Focus is not equipped with breakaway mirrors, skip to Step 8. For breakaway mirror construction, proceed to Step 7.

    7

Step out of the car when the mirror glass mount is turned inward. Install the mirror glass into the new mirror housing by sliding it horizontally inward on the retainer track, toward the door. Install the exterior breakaway cover onto the mirror by aligning all of the locking tabs and pushing the cover upward onto the mirror.

    8

Sit in the Focus as you would when you are driving down the road. View the driver's and passenger side mirrors to ensure they are properly aligned to your comfort. Make adjustments to any mirror that is not set at the angle you desire. Place both hands on the steering wheel and view the mirrors again. Repeat this step until you have the mirrors adjusted for your comfort and safety.
