In an effort to promote an equal or customized level of comfort for rear seat passengers, certain optionally-equipped 1998 Chevrolet Suburbans feature a second set of heater and/or air conditioning controls, accessible to the second-row occupants. Depending on your vehicle's specific factory A/C control options, second-row occupants may have the option to either manipulate the rear blower fan speeds, blend controls and temperature. Disabling the rear A/C may prove necessary to prevent young rear seat occupants from adjusting the controls or as a temporary measure if a malfunction occurs.
Instructions
Conventional Method
- 1
Examine the overhead air conditioning control panel, near the front passenger seating, positioned next to the map lights.
2Turn the blower fan speed knob from the REAR CNTL position to the OFF position. Turning the fan speed knob to the OFF position will render the rear A/C controls inoperable.
3Turn the blower fan speed control to the REAR CNTL position, or select the desired fan speed to engage the rear blower. Selecting REAR CNTL will allow the rear occupants to adjust the temperature, blend and blower speed controls, located above the second-row seating, independently of the driver's controls for the rear.
Disablement Due To Malfunction
- 4
Open the driver's side door and examine the outside edge of the dashboard; remove the small cover to gain access to the fuse block.
5Remove the fuse puller tool from the inner side of the fuse block cover. Locate and remove the fuse labeled 5 from the fuse block, using the supplied fuse puller tool; use your fingers to remove the fuse if the fuse puller is missing or broken. Removing the fuse will disable the rear comfort control system.
6Replace the fuse puller tool and fuse panel cover. Keep the removed fuse in a safe area, such as the vehicle's glove compartment. Replace the fuse after diagnosing and making the necessary repairs to the rear A/C control system.
