A leaking front master cylinder on the 2004 Yamaha motorcycle is a problem that should be addressed immediately. If it is not addressed, it can lead to multiple problems, the most severe being complete brake failure. Over time, brake lines, or the cylinder itself, undergo many types of wear and tear. There are numerous rebuild kits that can be used to refurbish the master cylinder of a Yamaha. Installing a brake master cylinder kit usually takes several hours.

Instructions

    1

Remove the master cylinder cap, insert the siphon tube and pump the brake fluid into a drip pan.

    2

Loosen the banjo bolt holding the brake hose in place and then slip the hose off the master cylinder. Use a rag to wipe up any spilled brake fluid.

    3

Remove the master cylinder from the handlebars with a socket set.

    4

Remove the pivot bolt with the socket set and remove the brake lever from the master cylinder to access the brake piston. Slide the piston out of the master cylinder.

    5

Take off the brake piston's dust boot, along with the retaining ring and spring. Remove the outer and inner rubber cups, too. These pieces will all be replaced with new pieces from the master cylinder kit.

    6

Clean the master cylinder piston bore with brake fluid and then dry with a shop rag. Assemble the inner and outer cups and the spring.

    7

Insert the piston assembly back into the master cylinder and then snap in the retaining ring and the dust boot.

    8

Slide the brake lever back in place and tighten the pivot bolt.

    9

Attach the master cylinder back to the handlebars with the socket set and then reattach the hose.

    10

Attach plastic hose or tubing to the front brake caliper's bleed valve. Open the bleed valve with the socket set and then squeeze the brake and hold it. Repeat this until there are no air bubbles in the fluid. Close the bleed valve.

    11

Top off the master cylinder with break fluid and then screw the cap back on.
