The engine coolant on the Pontiac Trans Sport works by circulating through the system and cooling the engine down with the help of the water pump. As the liquid circulates, it passes through the radiator where outside air and air from the cooling fan cools it down so it can cool the engine in turn. When the water pump fails, the coolant does not circulate properly and the engine will overheat. You need to replace the water pump as soon as you know it is bad. It will take about 2 hours to change it and you can do it yourself.

Instructions

    1

Remove the negative battery cable from the battery using a wrench to loosen the nut on the terminal. Open the valve on the bottom of the radiator using a wrench and drain the engine coolant into the drain pan. Disconnect the heater hose from the pump using a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamp. Remove the shield from the serpentine belt using a wrench.

    2

Relieve the tension on the serpentine belt by turning the idler pulley counter-clockwise using a 3/8-inch breaker bar. Remove the water pump pulley using a wrench to remove the bolts. Remove the water pump mounting bolts using a socket and ratchet. Pull the pump away from the engine block and clean the gasket material away using the scraper.

    3

Place a new gasket and water pump on the engine block and secure the bolts using a socket and ratchet. Install the water pump pulley and tighten the bolts with a wrench. Route the serpentine belt over the various pulleys and then add tension to it by turning the idler pulley clockwise using the breaker bar.

    4

Connect the heater hose to the water pump and tighten the hose clamp with the screwdriver. Make sure the valve on the bottom of the radiator is closed. Refill the radiator and reservoir with engine coolant. Connect the battery cable and tighten the terminal nut with a wrench. Start the Trans Sport and check the work area for leaking.
