Fuel consumption is an important factor in the budget of many households. Changing your fuel filter to keep up the fuel mileage on the 2005 Ford Freestar, can also save you the costly headache of having to replace other fuel components like the fuel injectors. The fuel filter removes dirt and sediment from the fuel before it reaches the engine, so the engine can run as smoothly as possible. The 2005 Freestar is equipped with an in-line filter, which makes it easy to replace, with little mechanical knowledge. Safety is the primary concern when changing your fuel filter.

Instructions

    1

Open the hood of the Freestar, and set the hood prop. Install a memory saver on the vehicle, using the manufacturer's installation instructions. Remove the negative battery cable from the battery, using a ratchet and a socket to loosen the lead hold-down. Tuck the battery cable behind the battery so that there is not chance of accidental connection during this project.

    2

Remove the Schrader valve cap from the left hand fuel rail. The cap resembles a tire valve stem cap, and is usually green or black in color. Place a drain pan beneath the vehicle, directly underneath the Schrader valve area. Wrap a Phillips screwdriver with a rag, leaving a small amount of rag material loose. Depress the nipple in the center of the Schrader valve to release the fuel pressure from the vehicle, using the remaining rag material to catch and wipe up any spilled fuel.

    3

Install the valve cap back on the Schrader valve when the fuel pressure has been released. Move the drain pan to the driver's side of the vehicle. Raise the rear of the Freestar using a jack, and place jack stands beneath the rear axle crossmember. Place the drain pan beneath the fuel filter underneath the driver-side rear seating area of the van, just in front of the rear tire.

    4

Pinch the quick-disconnect fitting on the fuel lines to release them from the fuel filter. Make sure the drain pan catches any spilled fuel. Loosen the band clamp around the fuel filter, then slide the old filter out of the band clamp. Insert the new fuel filter with the direction arrow pointing toward the front of the van. Tighten the band clamp until it is snug. Insert the quick disconnect fuel lines onto the filter, then slightly tug on them to make sure they are locked onto the filter ends.

    5

Remove the drain pan from beneath the vehicle and lower the van to the ground. Install the negative battery cable on the battery, and tighten the hold-down until it is snug. Remove the memory saver from the vehicle. Turn the ignition key to the accessories position without starting the car, then back to the off position. Repeat this procedure three times. Start the Freestar, then check your fuel line fittings for leaks.

    6

Transfer any spilled fuel from the drain pan into a certified fuel can or container. Wrap the old fuel filter inside of a plastic bag for transporting to a disposal facility near you.
