An AOD transmission is used with Ford trucks such as the F-150. An example of an AOD transmission is the 4R70W. Setting the transmission into place and completing the installation is a task that may take you three to four hours to complete. If you have previous mechanical experience, the AOD transmission for your truck can set in place at your home or at a garage.

Instructions

    1

Raise one end of the truck off of the floor with the floor jack. Set the jack stands under the frame on the inside of wheels. Repeat this step on the other side of the truck.

    2

Position the transmission under the front of the truck, at the rear of the engine block. Align the holes for the mounting bolts on the bell housing.

    3

Insert the crankshaft output shaft into the input socket of the torque converter. Tighten the bolts that are used to secure the bell housing, using the socket wrench. Adjust the bolts to 41 foot-pounds of torque, with the torque wrench.

    4

Set the fuel line bracket into place, and then tighten the retaining bolt. Attach the Y-pipe for the exhaust.

    5

Position the cross-member for the transmission into place on the underside of the transmission. Tighten the bolts used to secure the cross-member to 32 foot-pounds.

    6

Install a new O-ring at the bottom of the transmission filler tube. Set the tube into the transmission case, and secure the retaining bolt to the cylinder head on the right side.

    7

Re-attach the solenoid body connector to the transmission. Tighten the retaining bolt used to secure the fuel line bracket. Re-attach the harness connectors and re-connect the fluid cooler lines onto the fittings. Connect the shift linkage, and replace the rubber access plug that is located on the right side of the transmission.

    8

Lower the truck to the ground. Open the hood and add transmission fluid.
