The Volvo S40 hit United States showrooms starting in the 2000 model year. The 2002 S40 came standard with a turbocharged, 1.9-liter four-cylinder engine that cranked out 160 horsepower. The 2002 Volvo S40 also came standard with a washer fluid warning system that alerted the driver when the windshield washer fluid got low. This system used a small sensor that sat near the bottom of the washer fluid reservoir. Replacing the washer fluid sensor in the 2002 S40 requires removing the splash guard from under the front of the car.

Instructions

    1

Raise the front end of the S40, using a floor jack, and position jack stands under the vehicle's subframe. Lower the S40 onto the jack stands.

    2

Remove two bolts securing the plastic splash guard to the underside of the Volvo. Pull the splash guard rearward to free it from the front bumper, and remove it from the vehicle.

    3

Locate the bottom of the windshield washer tank from under the passenger's side of the S40. Locate the electrical component plugging into the lower part of the tank -- this is the washer fluid level sensor.

    4

Position a clean drain pan under the washer fluid level sensor. Press the locking button on the wiring harness plugging into the rear of the level sensor and unplug the harness.

    5

Pull the washer fluid level sensor from the washer fluid reservoir, using a slight twisting motion.

    6

Press a new washer fluid level sensor into the washer fluid reservoir, until the rubber flange seals onto the washer fluid reservoir. Plug the wiring harness into the new washer fluid level sensor.

    7

Reinstall the splash guard under the S40 and tighten its bolts, using a ratchet and socket.

    8

Raise the vehicle from the jack stands, using a floor jack, and remove the jack stands. Lower the S40 to the ground.

    9

Check the functioning of the new sensor by turning on the ignition. The low-fluid indicator should be lit.

    10

Open the washer reservoir tank and fill it with fresh washer fluid.
