In many land vehicles, shackles are used to connect vehicle leaf springs to the vehicle frame. While shackles are small, you must undergo several steps and make use of many automotive tools before you are able to access the shackles. Despite this, the actual wiring and installation of the shackles is a simple procedure.
Instructions
- 1
Position the jack stands in front of the leaf springs of your vehicle. Raise your vehicle's axle housing with the jack, and remove the original shackles from your leaf spring by removing the mounting bolts.
2Apply a thin layer of wheel bearing grease to your new shackles. Position these new shackles where the old shackles once were. Attach the bolts to the original hardware, but do not tighten them yet.
3Lower the vehicle to the ground, then tighten the shackle's mounting bolts with a torque wrench. Apply another layer of wheel bearing grease to the zerk fittings on the shackles.
4Drive your vehicle 50 miles, then repeat step 3.
