Pontiac originally intended the third-generation Grand Am as an economy car for those who couldn't afford to own a Grand Prix. However, before it Pontiac finally replaced the Grand Am with the G6 in 2006, it was the auto maker's best seller. The Grand Am rose to popularity in part due to the high percentage of creature comforts for a car in its price range. User-friendly interior equipment included an integrated multifunction switch that gave the driver control of the headlights, turn signals and cruise control through a single lever protruding from the left side of the steering column.

Instructions

    1

Pry the upper steering column trim collar off the column, using the trim tool. The collar is a two-piece item, with its parts joined at the sides of the column. Lift the collar off the column to expose the multifunction switch and set it aside.

    2

Unplug the multifunction switch wiring connector. You can locate the switch by following the headlight switch lever into the column, where it joins the body of the multifunction switch.

    3

Remove the retaining screw from the switch, using a Phillips screwdriver.

    4

Lift the switch out of the Grand Am's steering column and set it aside. Replace it with the new switch, set in the same position and orientation.

    5

Thread the retaining screw through the new switch and into the steering column, by hand. Tighten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver.

    6

Plug the wiring connector into the new switch. Lower the steering column upper trim collar into place and snap it together with the lower collar.
