How to Change a Sending Unit on a Rodeo

If you ever get inconsistent readings from the fuel gauge on the Isuzu Rodeo, it may be because the fuel sending unit has gone bad. The fuel sending unit is a sensor device that detects the amount of fuel inside the gas tank. It then translates that information from the sending unit to the gas tank. Replacement fuel sending units are available at most parts houses and take one to two hours to install.

Run the Rodeo until it runs out of gas or drain the fuel tank using a siphon with a hand pump. Transfer the fuel into empty gas cans.

Lift the hood of the Rodeo and remove the negative battery cable with the socket set.

Place the Rode emergency brake on and raise the jack until it lightly touches the gas tank.

Crawl beneath the rear end of the vehicle and use the socket set to remove the bolts holding the fuel tank straps in place. Once the fuel tank straps are loosened, lower the fuel tank slightly to access the top of the tank.

Use a screwdriver and socket set to remove the filler hose, the vent hose and the fuel supply and return lines. Lower the tank all the way down with the jack.

Remove the snap ring on the top of the tank and then lift the fuel pump assembly and sending unit out from the gas tank. Remove the sending unit from the clips holding it in place inside the fuel pump assembly. Slip the new sending unit into place and reconnect it.

Snap the fuel pump assembly back into the gas tank. Jack the tank up some and replace all lines and hoses.

Jack the tank all the way up and hold the tank support straps back in place. Replace the strap retaining bolts until the tank is fully strapped back in.

Lower the jack and remove it from underneath the Rodeo and then replace the negative battery cable.
