The 1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue base model came with a 3.8-liter six-cylinder and a four-speed automatic transmission. To increase the life of the transmission fluid and keep the transmission temperature within operating range, transmission fluid is routed from the transmission to the transmission cooler in the radiator and then back to the transmission. Because the transmission cooler lines are subject to the elements during daily driving, they may need to be replaced if the have become corroded or sustained any damage. Replacement transmission cooler lines are sold as an assembly and are available from your local parts store or dealership.

Instructions

Removal

    1

Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake. Lift the front of the vehicle into the air with a floor jack and place jack stands under the front sub-frame rails. Lower the vehicle until it rests securely on the jack stands.

    2

Place a drain pan under the transmission where the transmission cooler lines connect to the transmission; One line has a 45 degree bend and the other has 180 degree bend. Loosen the fittings with a line wrench and separate the transmission cooler lines from the transmission. Remove the bolt securing transmission cooler line bracket to the transmission case with a socket and ratchet. Lower the cooler lines to the drain pan and allow any transmission fluid to drain from the transmission and cooler lines into the drain pan.

    3

Move the drain pan to the passenger side corner of the radiator Loosen the transmission cooler line fittings at the radiator with a line wrench. Remove the bolt securing the bracket to lower radiator support with a socket and ratchet. Allow any transmission fluid to drain and remove the transmission cooler lines and drain pan from under the vehicle. Store the used transmission fluid in safe place until it can be disposed of properly.

Installation

    4

Lift the new transmission cooler line assembly to the radiator and loosely install the retaining bracket bolt to the lower radiator support. Lift the transmission end of the cooler line assembly and loosely install the line retaining bracket and bolt to the transmission case. Tighten both bracket retaining bolts to 18 foot-pounds with a torque wrench.

    5

Hand-thread the transmission cooler lines to their respective connections on the transmission. Tighten the fitting bolts to 17 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and crowfoot attachment. Hand thread the transmission cooler line fittings to their respective fittings on the radiator. Tighten the transmission cooler line fittings to 17 foot-pounds with a torque wrench and crowfoot attachment.

    6

Lift the front of the vehicle off the jack stands and remove the jack stands from under the vehicle. Lower the vehicle to the ground. Start the engine and slowly cycle from park all the way down to low gear, pausing for 3 seconds at every gear selection. Place the transmission into park. Check the transmission fluid level and fill the transmission in half quart increments with Dexron-III transmission fluid as necessary, but do not over fill the transmission.
