How to Replace the Head Gasket on a 1991 Geo Storm

Trying to replace a head gasket can be a challenging job for the novice, but it is a repair that you cannot let slide. If the head gasket needs replacing, it means that the coolant is leaking and that can cause more engine problems later. The gasket itself is not expensive, but getting to it is challenging.

Instructions

Getting to the head gasket

    1

The first step is to disconnect the battery, and then you drain the radiator by opening the petcock at the bottom of the radiator.

    2

On the passenger side of the engine, remove the accessory belt and then remove the power steering pump and mounting bracket. After that get them out of the way. At this point, remove the upper radiator hose

    3

Remove the entire distributor cap and move the wires attached to it out of the way. Next, remove the air cleaner-to-throttle body ducting. The exhaust pipe has to be unbolted from the manifold.

Removing the head gasket

    4

Park the car securely and place a jack stand or cement block under the oil pan. Remove the motor mount, the valve cover and the black plastic front engine cover. This is the timing belt cover. Remove the two bolts on the bottom on either side.

    5

Loosen the belt tenisoner. This will give enough slack to remove the belt.

    6

Remove all the hoses, the heater hose, hose to the firewall and the fuel line. Plug the fuel line or fuel will go everywhere. Remove the wiring harnesses.

    7

Remove the cylinder head with a 10mm Allen wrench. When you see the head gasket, pry it off.
