The 2000 Chevrolet Camaro was produced as a coupe, convertible, Z28 coupe and Z28 convertible. The base model coupe and convertible were equipped with 3.8-liter V-6 engines, while the Z28 models were fitted with 5.7-liter V-8 engines. The steering wheel on the 2000 Camaro has an air bag or SIR attached to the front face of the wheel. Disarming the SIR system on the steering wheel side is mandatory to avoid any issues with the SIR system.

Instructions

    1

Open the driver's door on the Camaro. Turn the engine on and point the wheels completely straight, regardless of the position of the steering wheel. Turn the ignition off and remove the key from the ignition cylinder. Step out of the Camaro and kneel next to the driver's compartment.

    2

Remove the insulator panel from beneath the dashboard using a ratchet and socket. Remove the insulator from the car completely. Disconnect the yellow two-wire connector at the base of the steering column. Remove the "Air Bag" fuse from the interior fuse panel, position number 10, using a fuse puller or pliers.

    3

Remove the four air bag fasteners from the back side of the steering wheel, which is the side that faces forward on the car. Use a T30 Torx bit and ratchet to remove the four fasteners. Remove the air bag module from the steering wheel. Disconnect by hand the three electrical connectors between the air bag and the steering wheel. Set the air bag module out of your work area. Remove the horn switch ground screw with a screwdriver or Torx driver, then disconnect the power lead by hand. Remove the horn switch from the steering wheel.

    4

Remove the steering wheel nut using a ratchet and socket. Disconnect by hand the horn ground lead, between the steering wheel and the column. Install the mounting screws for a J1859-A puller or equivalent into the air bag mounting holes in the steering wheel. Install the center bolt from J1859-A onto the center of the steering shaft. Rotate the hex bolt into the steering shaft to pull the steering wheel free from the steering column. Carefully remove the steering wheel from the steering column, making sure none of the other components behind the steering wheel fall out of the column.

    5

Install the new steering wheel in the straight positing onto the steering column, and slightly push it on to ensure proper alignment with the shaft splines. Route the electrical connectors into the new steering wheel.

    6

Install the steering wheel nut onto the steering shaft. Tighten the steering wheel nut to 32 foot-pounds of torque using a 1/2-inch-drive torque wrench and a socket. Install the horn switch ground lead, and tighten the mounting screw snug. Install by hand the power lead onto the horn switch. Install by hand the horn switch onto the air bag. Connect the three electrical connectors to the air bag module by hand. Install the air bag module onto the steering wheel. Tighten the four air bag module bolts to 25 inch-pounds using a 3/8-inch-drive torque wrench and the T30 Torx socket.

    7

Kneel next to the driver's compartment. Reconnect the yellow air bag connector at the base of the steering column. Install the insulator panel below the dash, and tighten the fasteners snug with the ratchet and socket.
