A/C Tech Tips for the '96 Honda Accord

Just about every car sold today comes with air conditioning. We simply hit the A/C button and expect cold air to come out. It is so common that we almost take it for granted -- until it goes out! It is easy to remember how much of a necessity cold air is on a hot summer day. There are a number of tips available to get the A/C working better for the 1996 Honda Accord.

Check the compressor belt. In the 1996 Honda Accord engine, the compressor is the power for the A/C system. The compressor pumps out refrigerant vapor under high pressure and high heat to the condenser. If the belt is not functioning properly the whole system will not be as effective.

Check the condenser. The condenser for the 1996 Honda Accord helps the high-pressure refrigerant vapor turn into liquid. The condenser is, in the Honda Accord, near the radiator. This should be checked and functioning properly for the coolest airflow.

Check for leaks in the receiver-drier. This is the storage for the liquid refrigerant. Often, with the 1996 Honda Accord, this tank becomes old and leaks. It should be replaced so that you can keep a full tank of liquid refrigerant available for the vehicle.

Check the evaporator. This is similar to the condenser. It contains tubes and fins and in the 1996 Honda Accord is mounted inside the passenger compartment. A blower fan inside the passenger compartment helps to distribute the cooler air evenly. Often, the blower fan will need to be replaced in older cars to help better distribute the air.

Take it to a mechanic. Most A/C repairs are best left to a repair shop unless you have automotive repair experience. Recharging the refrigerant requires special equipment that most people don't have access to.
