The ECU on a 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT is in the center console behind the dash. The ECU on a Mitsubishi is very sensitive to static electricity, so you should touch a ground before handling the computer. Because the ECUs are expensive and have relatively few problems, confirm that the power and ground connections are good before condemning the computer.

Instructions

    1

Disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using an 8 mm box-end wrench, if the battery has a side-mounted terminal. Use a -inch open-end wrench if the battery has a top-mounted terminal.

    2

Remove the carpeted panels on both sides of the center console. Remove the Phillips screw on the drivers side next to the gas pedal. Pop the plastic cover off the screw in the center of the panel using the small pocket screwdriver. Remove the Phillips screw underneath the cap. Pull the panel outward and down to remove it. Do the same for the opposite side.

    3

Locate the ECU, under the dash at the end of the metal center console housing. There is one 10 mm bolt on the passenger side and two on the drivers side. Remove these with the 10 mm socket and ratchet.

    4

Pull the ECU out of the drivers side. Press on the release tabs in the center of the electrical plugs and pull them straight out.

    5

Install the new ECU, grounding yourself first by touching the metal part of the center console to dissipate any possible static electricity before handling the computer. Remove the ECU from the box and install the electrical plugs, making sure they go in perfectly straight and until they snap-lock in place.

    6

Move the ECU into position and install the 10 mm bolts. Push the carpet panel up under the top edge of the center console. Align the screw holes and install the Phillips screws. Reconnect the negative battery cable and tighten it with a wrench.
