The 2001 Ford Focus SE came with an optional 2.0-liter dual overhead cam engine designated "Zetec" by Ford. This engine uses a distributorless ignition system and a coil pack to fire the spark plugs. The manufacturer recommends replacing the spark plugs in the Zetec engine, every 30,000 miles to prevent misfires and possible damage to the expensive ignition system. Basic tune-up tools are required to complete the project.

Instructions

    1

Allow the engine to cool completely before attempting to remove the spark plugs. Grasp the top of the spark plug wire boot, located in the center of the valve cover, with the plug wire pliers. Twist the boot as you pull it off the spark plug. Inspect the full length of the wire for signs of arcing and physical damage. Replace the spark plug wires as a set if you discover damage.

    2

Insert a 5/8 inch spark plug socket, mounted to an extension and ratchet, into the spark plug hole. Remove the spark plug by turning it counterclockwise using the socket, extension and a ratchet.

    3

Check and adjust the gap between the center electrode and the side electrode on the new spark plug using a spark plug gaping tool. The proper gap on the Zetec engine is .051 inch.

    4

Insert the new spark plug into the spark plug socket and slide into the hole in the valve cover. Screw the new spark plug into the engine by hand. Torque the spark plug to 108 inch-pounds using a torque wrench. Push the spark plug wire onto the spark plug until it snaps into place. Repeat the process for the remaining three spark plugs.
